American Indian Pewter Inlaid Awl c. 1800's
This is an unusual awl tool with presentation grade from the Native American Indians of the 1800’s. The piece shows hardwood, two piece grip scales, likely walnut or rosewood, that are adorned with poured pewter inlays in a bar and circle pattern often found on Great Lakes Woodland Indians pieces. The piece started its life as a trade knife or utensil and was ground down into a hide puncturing awl, a typical tool used by the American Indians when creating beadwork. Such highly finished awls are very uncommon, especially those set with pewter. Measures overall 7 1/2” L.
