American Folk Art whaler's cane with carved whale bone shaft and Marine ivory head made from tooth. Shows scrimshaw designs and word, "Salem". The top portion of the head shows a 5 pointed star and around its base isscrimshawed with a whale, hour glass, ladder, mallet, Masonic symbol, anchor and other designs. The top area of the cane is beautifully carved in a rope type band. There are baleen spacers. The cane measures33-3/4" in length. The condition is very good to near fine showing normal aging and use. We would date this fine cane to the mid 19th century and it is ID'd to America's whaling center, Salem Mass. The best we have seen at auction in a decade on the West Coast. Est.;$2,500-$5,000.
