A magnificent Moche avian effigy from Peru, c. AD 400 - 700, an exceptionally large example depicts a condor, one of the most important birds for ancient Andean cultures, associated with the Sun Deity. This sacred bird's bones and organs were used in shamanic healing rituals and the condor represented the ruler of the Upper World in mythology. Condors are still considered to be symbols of power. The comb on the beak identifies this example as a male and the red head is thought to communicate emotion. L: 12 1/2 in. In exceptional condition. Ex Caravallo collection.
