A. P. Casey Sub-Inspected Colt Single Action Cavalry Revolver

Estimate: $4500 - 6500
U.S. Contract Single Action Cavalry Model revolver manufactured in 1875 and inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector A.P. Casey (APC). The underside of the barrel, cylinder side and rear face, trigger guard, back strap and right grip heel are stamped with Casey's tiny "C" sub-inspection mark. A small "C" is stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole and a "J" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the barrel next to the serial number. The script initials "APC" are stamped in a rectangle on the lower left side of the grip. The revolver has the first style ejector housing with barrel boss, early "bullseye" ejector rod head, and "cavalry" style hammer with cone-shaped firing pin and elongated bordered knurling on the spur. The barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap are blued and the hammer, loading gate and frame have a color casehardened finish. The one-piece walnut grip is oil-finished. The barrel is roll-stamped with the first style "script" address "+COLT'S P T. F. A. MFG. Co HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.+" with a slanted cross at either end. A "P" proof mark is stamped on the underside of the barrel next to the sub-inspection mark and on the side of the cylinder. The full serial number, "18750" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "8750" is stamped on the cylinder and written in pencil on the back strap inlet of the grip. The barrel is stamped with the partial serial number "8643". The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the early "Two-Date/Two-Line" patent markings followed by the "U.S" property mark. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "841". Most of the Casey sub-inspected single action revolvers were originally issued to U.S. cavalry regiments on the frontier and subsequently overhauled and reissued. "COLT CAVALRY AND ARTILLERY REVOLVERS" by Kopec and Fenn states that Cavalry Model Single Action Serial No. 18732 was issued to C Troop, 5th Cavalry in 1886 and serial no. 18787 was issued to I Troop, 7th Cavalry in 1888. Serial No. 18749 was issued to the New York Militia around 1895. This revolver appears to be a U.S. cavalry issue pistol that was overhauled c. 1895 and retained all of the original components except the barrel.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 45 Long Colt
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 18750
Condition: Very good as refinished. The revolver retains 75% of the refurbished blue overall. The finish on the side of the ejector housing is thin. The cylinder has most of the blue finish. The grip strap, butt and back strap show handling wear and have a smooth, silver-gray patina. The frame, hammer and loading gate retain 85% of the casehardened finish; the case colors are thin and silvering. The grip is in very good condition with a coat of old varnish applied with minor edge wear. The markings on the lower left side of the grip are worn but legible. The markings on the barrel and frame are light but fully legible. The action is crisp and fully functional. This is a solid representative example of an 1875 production, A.P. Casey inspected, Colt Single Action Cavalry revolver.
