HONOR WINNER EDWARD DAVIS FOR ACTION AT SAN JUAN HILL. This watch was made by American Waltham and has a 14k case with the exterior of the back plate showing the initials “E D”. The interior of the back plate marked is “ESSEX 14K SUPERIOR 496713”. The outside of the interior back plate is engraved “EDWARD DAVIS 9th CAVALRY”. The inside of the interior back plate is numbered “496713”. The movement is marked “A.W.W. CO. WALTHAM. MASS. ROYAL. 539008”. The watch is housed in its original purple lined wooden case with a federal shield inlaid in the top. PFC Edward Davis was attached to Troop H of the 9th Colored Cavalry during the Spanish American War. He was initially awarded the Medal of Merit for service at San Juan Hill and El Canay, which was later changed to the Congressional Medal of Honor. The bravery of the 9th & 10th Colored Cavalry during the charge at San Juan Hill can be best exemplified by the words of a grateful “Rough Rider”, “If it hadn’t been for the black Cavalry, the Rough Riders would have been exterminated”. Private Edward Davis was suffering from a scalp wound with blood streaming down his face from the initial engagement. He quickly had his head wrapped and continued on, joining the charge of San Juan Hill. The lot also includes a modern copy of the Medal of Merit, and a small Spanish American War Veterans Badge. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a looseleaf binder containing many pages of information about PFC Edward Davis and Troop H of the 9th Colored Cavalry.
