1) CAVALRY SABER. A good example of a US M1840 cavalry saber measuring 43” overall with a 36” blade. Plain blade with a single wide fuller and a single narrow fuller near the spine. The ricasso is stamped “AMES MFG. CO. CABOTVILLE 1851” & “US A.D.K.”. Solid brass hilt with 2-branch guard. Standard Phrygian cap pommel with formerly wire-wrapped grip. Iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with light pitting near the tip. Hilt is quite solid and has a pleasing patina. Grip has been wrapped with cord, but appears to have the remains of some leather and the wooden core under the cord. Scabbard has a dark patina with a few minor shallow dents. 2) CAVALRY SABER. A US M1860 cavalry saber in relic condition. Overall length: 41”. Blade length: 34 1/2". Plain blade has a single wide fuller and a single narrow fuller near the spine. The ricasso is stamped “U.S 1865 A.G.M” and the marking on the other side is illegible. Solid brass hilt with branches removed. No grip or scabbard. CONDITION: as stated, this is a relic sword with a dark patina on the blade. There are no branches on the guard and no grip covering the tang. 3) DECORATIVE CAVALRY SABER. This large and exceptionally heavy solid brass cavalry saber measures 42” overall with a 34 1/2" blade. It appears that the brass blade is cast separately from the brass hilt. The blade is plain with a single medium fuller. The hilt is of 2-branch form and is completely cast is brass. Total weight of the sword is several pounds and it was likely made as an outside decoration possibly for a barracks or a divisional office. CONDITION: sword has a dark patina with areas of verdigris on the hilt. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18329/BF). $400-600.
