3/4 Groove Native American Indian Stone Axe Head
Featured in this lot is a late archaic period, ca. 5000 to 3000 BCE, 3/4 Groove Native American Indian Granite Stone Axe Head. The axe head shows a semi-polished, predominantly black and speckled hard granite stone. Hand-carved construction of a broad form with a thick butt end, a bifacial blade head, and a smooth groove that encircles the entirety of the handle – hence the moniker “full groove axe head.” Though the design of this axe head suggests it was used as a hand tool, the full groove perhaps enabled it to be bound to the end of a wooden handle for warfare. The dark grey hued stone bears prevalent inclusions in hues of light pink, light gray, dark gray, brown, and black that create an attractive presentation. This one pound stone head is in very nice condition. It does exhibit normal use chipping at the edge and the blunt side exhibits use with discoloration noted from repeated impacts. In a fight, this stone head would have been a formidable weapon with the proper handle. Measures 4.5"L x 2.5"W x 1.5"D.*
