Offered in this lot is a first edition of "In Darkest Africa: The Rescue and Retreat of Emin Governor of Equatoria”, volumes I and II. This is Stanley's account of one of the last of the 19th century expeditions by Europeans into the interior of the African continent. Stanley crosses Africa with a small legion of followers to rescue the besieged ruler of Equatoria, a German Jewish doctor who had been appointed governor by Gordon in 1879 and had become isolated and hemmed in by his enemies. The book is complete with all illustrations and maps, including the two large folding maps: the "Map of The Route of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition through Africa" and the “Map of the Routes of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition from the River Congo to the Victoria Nyanza". The books are profusely illustrated with wood-engravings. The volumes are bound in red linen with gold embossing and black artwork on the cover and spine. The gilt-decorated covers are quite striking. The books are in good condition for their age. The books measure 9" X 6" X 1 3/4".
