19th Century Sperm Whale Teeth Collectable Set
This lot consists of two antique sperm whale teeth. These teeth most likely date to the late 19th to early 20th century and came out of an old collection housed in Arizona. The larger tooth measures approx. 5” in length, approx. 1” across the tapered base and is especially solid with little hollow cavity at the bottom. It is a fine classically curved shaped specimen tooth that has not been sanded or altered. It displays an lovely cream and beige aged patina. The smaller tooth measures approx. 4 ¼” in length and 2” across the base. It too displays an attractive creamy aged patina and also appears to be in its mostly specimen condition without being overly polished. Most sperm whale teeth today have been bought up by scrimshanders and decorated with their unique art. Specimen examples are difficult to find today. These would make superb displays as from a distant time when whale oil illuminated the civilized world. The teeth weigh 10oz. with the longest measuring 5 1/4" long.*
