19th Century SD&Co Marked Copper/ Iron Knife with Whale Tooth Handle
This knife has a 5 7/8" blade marked SD&Co, which was copper plated to provide additional resistance to sea-spray induced rust. Brass diamond guard. Whale tooth handle scrimshawed with the initials "S.A.P." (likely done by a 19th century whaler) and adorned with inlaid mother of pearl circle on the ivory tooth inserted ring flanked by black colored baleen bands. OAL: 11".

Condition: Very good. The iron copper/blade has had a protective coating applied. The ivory has some minor age cracks and handling marks. The ivory tooth has a nice grain pattern. A nice example of the folk art of the whaling industry of old.
