19th C. Sioux Umbilical Cord Fetish - Fort Yates
This is a fantastic 19th Century umbilical cord turtle fetish from the Sioux of the Northern Plains collected from Fort Yates in North Dakota Territory. The piece exhibits Indian tanned hide with sinew sewing covered in period 1800's glass trade seed beads with a geometic pattern showing colors of amber, semi-transparent rose, semi-transparent green. The piece has a small tear which exposes the sheep wool and horse hair packing. There is some cotton thread as well as a good bit of sinew sewing as well with rolled tin jingle dangle cones at each corner with red dyed horse tail hair fringes. The bottom shows some worn through spots as well as some nice patina. The nice large umbilical cord fetish displays well, being very similar to the Sioux 19th Century fetish sold by Hindman Freeman's in 2022 for $2,500. There are a few cracks, including the tail, but the piece displays very well with some stiffness to the hide. Measures overall 6.5" by 8.5".
