19th C. Ladies Fancy & Wedding Trade Bead Necklace
This exceptional necklace of “Ladies Fancy" beads date from the late 19th century. The red "Wedding" beads are colored with selenium, which gives it a brighter color than glass colored with gold. The use of selenium was discontinued in the 1920s as it became more expensive than gold. Also on this necklace are some rare examples of "trail work" beads. Twelve of the red beads have been "Paddled " to flatten them. The beads measure an average of 3/8" X 3/8" to 1/2" X 1/2". There are 63 beads total on raffia that measures 33". The beads and necklace are in very good condition for their age. Provenance: letter of appraisal from Out-West Designs, L. W. Dinneen, with a value of $1700.
