A distinguished United States Army officer, Joseph Taggart McNarney rose through the ranks to become a four-star general. He was a significant contributor to various military operations and administrative positions both during and after World War I and II. He was born on August 28, 1893, in Emporium, Pennsylvania. In 1915, McNarney received his diploma from the United States Military Academy at West Point. During World War I, he served in a number of positions, including as the commander of a machine gun company and later as a staff officer. Throughout the interwar years, McNarney advanced through the ranks, eventually earning degrees from the Army War College and the Command and General Staff School. McNarney played a significant part in World War II. He worked for General Dwight D. Eisenhower, as the supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe. As a result, McNarney played a crucial role in organizing and carrying out the Allied invasion of Normandy on D-Day (June 6, 1944), which led to the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi rule. The success of these campaigns was greatly influenced by his leadership and contributions. After the war, McNarney was chosen to serve as Germany's Deputy Military Governor during the occupation, helping to stabilize and rebuild the nation. He rose to vice chief of staff of the US Army in 1947. McNarney served as both the United States representative to the United Nations Military Staff Committee and the Supreme Allied Commander of the Mediterranean during the Korean War. In spite of his 1952 retirement from active duty, McNarney remained active in a number of government and military-related endeavors. From 1952 to 1954, he represented the United States on the Military Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). After leaving the military, McNarney had a prosperous business career and was a member of the boards of several companies. On February 1st, 1972, he passed away in La Jolla, California.
