This is an example of an unusual restored/assembled 1938 dated Mauser Banner luger pistol. The pistol has the all salt blue finish with blued trigger and other small parts and checkered walnut grips. Based on the exceptionally low serial number of this pistol (227) with no letter suffix, and the year of production, 1938, this pistol probably started as a military luger using military parts and was then converted or diverted for commercial sales in Germany prior to WWII. During this conversion the various military parts were all retained by the factory and the Commercial type parts, such as the Mauser Banner toggle were added and the pistol was just proofed with the Commercial "Crown U" proofs. The Mauser Banner logo on the front toggle shows a lightly rolled "Mauser Banner" trademark and the actual metal finish shows a slightly rougher texture, which again could indicate that the luger started as a military model that was converted into a Banner and then released for Commercial sales. As noted, the Mauser Banner trademark is stamped on the front toggle link and the chamber is dated "1938". The Nazi military acceptance proofs are stamped on the right side of the barrel extension and left side of the barrel and consists of the standard "eagle/63" proof next to the single eagle firing proof. The left rear side of the barrel has a single small "eagle 63" proof with a single eagle firing proof on the right side. The left side of the barrel extension has the standard commercial proofmark that consists of the "Crown U" over the serial number, with both sets of proofmarks on the left side of the breechblock. The pistol is fitted with an all blued unmarked magazine with the aluminum base that is marked "869n/eagle 63" Waffenamt proof.
