Every picture tells a story, and this card is no exception. Fred Merkle enjoyed a solid 16-year career during the Deadball Era, however he is best known, unfortunately, for his acquiring the nickname "Bonehead" on a controversial play in 1908 in a game between the Chicago Cubs and his New York Giants. At the time of the play, he was only 19 years old, the youngest player in the National League. In the bottom of the 9th inning with runners on 1st (Merkle) and 3rd, a base hit apparently scored the winning run. As they often did in those days, fans rushed the field in celebration as soon as the run scored. In the chaos, Merkle took off for the dugout, never having actually touched 2nd base. HOF Cubs 2nd baseman Johnny Evers retrieved the ball (although many accounts say the ball was not the actual game ball) and stepped on 2nd base to record the force out. Umpires agreed, Merkle was out, the run therefore could not score, so the game was declared a tie. The Cubs and Giants would end up tied for 1st place at the end of the season, with Chicago winning the pennant and going on to win the World Series (their last for 108 years!). Merkle was sadly pegged by this one play, and the resulting nickname, forever. This rare Coupon card, a "type 2" version, is graded 1 PR by SGC.
