For your consideration is a First Edition of, "With Indians in the Rockies" by James Willard Schultz, 1912. This book was published by Houghton Mifflin Company, The Riverside Press Cambridge out of Boston and New York. This book tells the fascinating story of two young men, one Indian and one white, who became stranded in the Rockies in early winter with only the clothes on their back. Resorting to primitive methods of making fire, weapons, shelter and clothes, they survive a frigid winter, and have numerous fantastic adventures. Although the book is fiction, it is based on a story told by a well-known fur trader who had lived most of his life among the Western Indians. J. W. Schultz (1859–1947) was an author, explorer, and historian known for his historical writings of the Blackfoot Indians in the late 1800s, when he lived among them as a fur trader. In 1907, Schultz published “My Life as an Indian”, the first of many future writings about the Blackfeet that he would produce over the next thirty years. Schultz lived in Browning, Montana. There are numerous illustrations throughout the book reproduced from drawings by George Varian.
The book is good overall condition. The brown cloth bound cover features a drawing by George Varian of the book's two main characters, slight scuffing to the cover edges, the intact pages show age tanning and foxing throughout. Measures 5.5"W x 8.25"L x 1"D
