Another tragic story from the early annals of baseball. Bugs Raymond was a larger than life character, a spitball pitcher with a reputation of being a bit of a "live wire" (hence the "Bugs" nickname). Unfortunately his antics, on and off the mound, were the result of acute alcoholism. He had some talent, but was a habitual drinker. After winning 18 games for John McGraw's NY Giants in 1909, he became more unreliable, and in 1911 he was released. He ended up playing semi-pro in 1912, but died in September of that year at the age of 30 after getting into a series of fights, including on a baseball diamond where he was hit with a baseball bat. That blow was the cause of death on the coroner's report, but everybody in the game knew what really killed Raymond. This one grades PR 1 by PSA.
