1904 Yellowstone National Park Stereoscope Images
For your consideration is this 1904 first edition of "Yellowstone National Park Through The Stereoscope" by Underwood & Underwood. An important photographic tour of Yellowstone, containing twenty-nine stereoscopes of the park in black and white and a few in color. Like many natural wonders of the western United States, the beauties of Yellowstone had to be seen to be believed. As a result, it became a popular subject for photographic firms, from F. Jay Haynes to Underwood and Underwood, who specialized in stereoscopic views. Almost all of the views are copyrighted 1904 on the mount , with an accompanying title. The verso of each mount contains a few paragraphs describing the scene, with the title from the recto further translated into French, German, Spanish, Swedish, and Cyrillic, demonstrating the wide geographic spread of those who would be interested in the images. The images are in good condition with a few showing some wear from their vintage age. The slip case shows good condition with light wear to the edges and staining on the outside case. The spine of the case features the title and publishers in gold gilt lettering. The case measures 7 1/2" L x 4" W x 2" D. The images measure 3 3/8" L x 6 7/8" W.
