1890-1899 Original Blemmingham Indian Ledger Art
The lot features an original circa 1890-1899 Ledger Page from the same collection as the Statement of Blemmingham ledger book with original Northern Plains ledger art. The page shows a graphite and colored pencil ledger art from the Northern Plains, likely Sioux showing a Warrior who just killed a U.S. Cavalry soldier and his horse. The piece shows a 4-point morning star in blue with a black maltese cross at the center; yellow painted cavalry horse with bit in mouth / two shots or stabs in the belly and “US” on the back; on the right a rattlesnake which is likely a signature as its found on all the examples with a white crescent moon above and horse tracks below; and on the left the dead U.S. Cavalry soldier with hands chopped and head either bashed in or scalped, pistol and rifle laying at his side along with his hands, hat and US canteen. A gruesome scene. The ledger has nice foxing and discoloration around the edges from early age. The piece is from the Blemmingham Ledger book, the very same as the 1871 Example that sold in our September 2021 sale for $1,107 (shown with bp). The ledger page dates to circa 1890-1899, the artwork appears to be of an older age but exact age is unknown. The ledger sheet measures 12” by 7 3/8”.
