For your consideration is this 1887 illustrated edition of "From Tannery to White House - The life of Ulysses S. Grant: His Boyhood, Youth, Manhood, Public and Private Life and Services" by William M. Thayer, published and copy-righted by James H. Earle in 1885. William M. Thayer’s comprehensive biography of Ulysses S. Grant tracks the legendary general’s career from being a failed businessman to the hero of the Union in the Civil War. In the 19th century, one of the surest ways to rise to prominence in American society was to be a war hero, like Andrew Jackson and William Henry Harrison. But few would have predicted such a destiny for Hiram Ulysses Grant, who had been a career soldier with little experience in combat and a failed businessman when the Civil War broke out in 1861. The book shows a a highly detailed and decorated front cover and spine showing a brown hardcover with black embossed images of the White House and a log cabin, with the title in gold embossed lettering surrounded by a gold embossed rectangle. The spine features the same gold gilt lettering and black embossed floral images. The book features illustrations scattered throughout. The book shows good condition overall with the spine and corners showing some wear from the books vintage age. The interior pages are in good condition with only the title page being slightly disconnected, all other pages show no signs of tears or foxing. The book measures 7 1/2" L x 5 1/4" W x 1 1/2" D.
