1874 Sharps Heavy Barrel Sporting Rifle, .44 cal., serial #155017. The rifle is in overall very good condition with a 30” heavy octagon barrel. The rifle sports a silver blade front and ladder rear sights. The barrel and receiver have drifted to a sliver-grey patina with small amounts of blue and case hardening apparent in protected areas. There are two sets of serial numbers on the barrel flat with one set in smaller font matching the number on the tang. The smooth woodstocks appear to have been replaced. The stocks show small mars, compressions and a 2” crack on the right side of the fore end. Additionally, the stock features a pewter fore end cap and checkered metal butt plate. The bore is very good, theaction crisp and markings are sharp. A factory letter accompanies the rifle indicating the original invoice date of March 3, 1876 with shipment to noted Western Sharp’s dealer Carlos Gove and Sons of Denver, Colorado. The rifle islisted as .44 caliber with a double set trigger, open sights, oil finished stocks and chambered for the 70 grain case. A great combination of heavy barrel and desirable Western shipping destination make this Sharps special. Est.: $4,000-$8,000.
