1871 Trapdoor Springfield .50-70 caliber rifle with stock reduced to sporter length or half stock. The metal surfaces show a light gray and brown patina finish with some traces of blue mixed in. The stock shows some light cleaning and application of a light brownish stain or coloring. The left side of the stock shows a E.S.A. cartouche between the lock plate screws. There are initials punched into the stock J.F.H. and J.H. in a coupleplaces with a J.W. on reverse and 1914. There is some scorching around the butt plate from being used close to a campfire. The rear sight has been removed and there is a shotgun bead type front factory dovetails bore shows just a trace of rifling and was probably being used as a fowling piece. Found by an old time collector in Montana. Est.: $700-$1,400.
