Every effort is made to answer the phone between 9 and 6 pm Eastern Standard Time daily. If you are calling and do not get an answer, we are probably on other lines with other collectors, be patient and call back. We welcome overseas bidders, and will work with you as best we can on shipping items to successful bidders.
This document was found in an estate in Knoxville, Tennessee. The paper and ink is no doubt old. This is an opinion and only that, you decide what this is or is not. My thought is that this is a copy of a document made by or for Robert Lovinggood, Major General. The U. S. Grant signatures are not the same as the known signatures of U. S. Grant, but the Lovinggood signatures match with his known signatures. This is one folded sheet of paper measuring some 11 1/8" by 8 5/8". The first notation is Provost Marshalls Office/Loudon Tennessee/March 22nd 1864/ Guards & pickets will pass Robert Lovinggood through the lines on Monro Co road during the present war By command of Maj. Gen. U. S. Grant-Commanding the Armies of the United States, J. L. McDowel? Assist-Adj. Gen/Acting Assist-Adt-Gen. Second note on bottom half of same page folded: Richmond Va Headquarters Army of the Potomac/To Maj. Gen. R. Lovinggood Commander in Chief U. S. Forces Washington City/ My forces attacked the rebels in their intrenchments around Richmond and after a hard struggle of one hour thanks to Almighty God we gained a complete victory. Richmond is ours. U. S. Grant/Lieut -Gen USA. Third note on about half the paper: Proclamation Murphy Sept. 20, 1864 All persons having heretofore sympathised with the Rebel cause will be pardoned on coming forward and taking the oath of Allegiance to the United States again. This the 15th October 1874 by orders of Robert Lovinggood Maj. Gen. Comm of Western N. C., Permitted by Maj. Gen. U. S. Grant USA ? W. Nicholdson Acting Assist-Adj-Gen.
