1860s-1890s Ancre Spiral Breguet Pocket Watch
This lot has a rare mid to late 19th century Swiss made "Galonne" gold wash silver, key wind pocketwatch, inscribed, "Ancre Spiral Breguet 15 rubis", 15 jewels, imported into Germany per the identification markings inside the back case. Key-wind, key-set: You need a special type of key to wind and set the watch. This was the standard from the 1600s through the mid-1800s. Real gemstones were installed as the "jewels" in the mechanisms to reduce friction, synthetic "jewels" were not universally used until the late 19th century.
This piece is inscribed, "Ancre Spiral Breguet 15 rubis" on the interior: "...a large number of counterfeits were made in the late 18th century and throughout the 19th century. There were considerably more of them than real Breguet timepieces. If you own one of the following timepieces, unfortunately it is a counterfeit: a pocket watch with an individual number higher than 5500, a pocket watch bearing the words “Spiral Breguet”. Between the 1880s and 1910s, many manufacturers added this inscription in large letters to their products to add to their credibility. However, Breguet never used this type of inscription..." - from Breguet website.
Due its rare winding mechanism, its age, jewels and notoriety, this pocketwatch is a must have for timepiece collectors.
