Circa 1620-1640. This rapier has the "Pappenheimer" hilt profile which posseses elements of both cup and swept hilt designs. The blade extends 42 1/2 inches past the hilt, with the 2 inch ricasso protected by the shell guards. A set of double fullers on the main body of the blade extend to nearly the tip. A set of 10 diamond shaped punches are located in the blade on both sides near the guard. Having the overall appearance of a cup guard, the hilt has a set of dual turned quillions, 10 inches from tip to tip, wide side rings extending 6 to 6/12" across, and a pair of perforated guard plates, 4 3/4 inch by 3 1/2 inch, supported with a set of reinforced front arms. The grip is wire and leather wrapped in a twist pattern, and the 2 1/2 inch long octagonal pommel is engraved with floral designs. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection

Fair, there is heavy pitting visible on the blade with moderate pitting on the remainder of the metal components. There is some material absent towards the tip. A small brazed repair is visible on one side of the shell guard at the "S" with the "S" on the other side replaced. There is a mixed brown and gray patina overall. The replacement grip shows minor wear. The blade has a slight bend to the left near the tip. The pommel is slightly loose with the rest of the sword solid.
