This is a Victorian era officer's cap for the 16th or The Queen's Lancers. The skull and peak are composed of black patent leather. There is gold lace around the waist and lower edge of the skull. The peak has gold bullion sewn in three bands. The mortar board top is black melton cloth with ridged sides. There is a gold bullion plume boss with a "VR" cypher supporting a black feather plume with a ring. Gold bullion cord crosses the top and descends the angled corners. The gilt rayed plate has the Victorian crown on top of The Royal Arms of Great Britain in silver with 13 battle honors and "SIXTEENTH LANCERS" at the bottom. Two lion's head ear bosses suspend a gilt velvet backed chin chain. The front peak is lined in green skived leather. There is a natural skived leather sweat band with a purple silk liner with "J. B. JOHNSTONE" label. With an additional 16th Lancers Officer's cap plate with 13 battle honors and a cap line with flounders.

Condition: Fine, the patent leather shows some light scratches and some wear from the chin chain. A couple stitches of bullion on the peak are loose. The plume boss and top bullion cord are beginning to darken with age. The plate has a generally bright appearance with some wear and the silver components have a dark aged patina. The additional plate is mostly bright with some patina on the plate and silver components. The cap line is very good.
