The donation is a 1970 C& C Redwing sail boat. It’s been moored at the Saltspring Island Sailing Club for the past 13 years and at the Thunderbird Marina in West Vancouver for 6 years prior to that. It was originally moored in the Victoria area.
The boat has had three owners. One for the the first 30 years, one for less than a year (a film director living temporarily in Canada) and ourselves.
Having owned it for 19 years, we know it has been well maintained with regular oil changes / tuneups, annual haul outs for bottom cleaning and zinc replacements, and complete bottom painting every two years. Most maintenance records are provided.
In addition, we completed an upgrade to the standing rigging about 15 years ago when all rigging and sheets were replaced and some were strengthened to meet our coastal weather conditions. Also, the hull was completely stripped and refinished 8 years ago. There are no hull blisters on the hull and all rigging is in good condition.
The boat comes with a full compliment of sails including symmetrical spinnaker. The fore sail is a 135 % Genoa and there is a Harkin roller reefer installed. The main sail is loose footed but the boom does come with a roller reefer. Sails are in good condition with the weather strip on the Genoa having been replaced about four years ago.
Mechanically the boat is in good shape. The original Atomic 4 engine runs well and has very low yearly hours. We rarely go through more than a half tank of fuel per season as the motor is mainly used to get in and out of marinas. There is a detailed maintenance and parts manual on board and replacement parts are readily available from Moyer Marine if ever the need arises. Oil is changed regularly.
The transmission was replaced about 8 years ago with a rebuilt transmission from Moyer Marine. It required lifting out the motor so all hoses were replaced as well as a new water pump was installed.
The interior cushions and exterior cockpit cushions are like new, and there’s a very good two burner alcohol stove. There is a lot of natural finished teak throughout the cabin interior and exterior trims. Other equipment includes a rail mount BBQ, a complete Sunbrella winter cover, and a Marine radio. There is a fully functioning head with wash basin and waste storage tank. There is a stainless steel water tank (upgrade from the plastic original) galley sink, and ice box.
The boat has classic lines and is a ‘head turner‘ with its lower profile and tapered stern. It’s sailing handling and performance are reliable and quick. It moves well with light wind, speedy when on the beam and is stable and sure in rougher water and while ‘running’ with the wind. ‘Wing on wing’ is easily accomplished with a fresh following breeze.
It performs very well as a day sailer or cruiser for family of four. This boat has never been raced but the design is known to have been designed for racing a winner in races when it was first built. I have single handed the boat on many occasions but the boat is most easily sailed with a mate.
I’ve attached three photos of the boat taken this year both in and out of the water.
The boat is currently insured. It’s replacement value is listed at $23,000. There is an additional $2,000,000 of liability insurance being carried.
Deficiencies we are currently aware of include: one through hull fitting (still working fine) may need to be repaired or replaced, some exterior corrosion showing on the heat exchanger, and one port bow running light is not working.
The Sail Boat is Currently moored at a private marina in Sidney and the location and a pickup time will be arranged with the high bidder
A Special Thank you to “Eagle Eye Marine” for transport the sailboat from the Donator to the selling location.
