Superbly Decorated Pair of Exhibition Quality Presentation J. Lamotte Flintlock Pistols -A) Silver M
A) Operating out of St. Etienne during the 18th Century, Joseph Lamotte (1716-84) was a known supplier of cavalry arms. Fixed blade sight on the royal blue finished barrel, with a cannon muzzle, multicolored gold "cloudburst" design around the sight, and a ribbed middle band, with an engraved and inlaid array of 15 stars around a crescent moon (crest of the Sultan of Turkey), bordered by rays of light leading to an additional 15 stars ahead of the band, and the areas behind dominated with a raised array of arms, flags and drums, along with flags backed by a pair of columns, all with a textured and gold washed background. Engraved lock with gold filler, with "Bte. Lamotte/ Ainc" under the flashpan, "A. St. Etienne" under the frizzen spring and additional gold filled engraving on the frizzen, hammer, jaw and hammer spring. Silver trigger/guard, with a small hallmark on the rear tang, raised array of arms on the main area, and a floral urn on the finial, and the silver reverse plate is covered with arms and drums, with gold accented screws. Full length stock, with silver wire scroll inlays, a silver armament themed plate on the smooth wrist, and a silver buttcap, with a half moon in cloudburst on the bottom, and arms, drums and trumpets around the sides.

Condition: Very fine, with 90% of the original blue and gold finish, showing a small amount of brown patina on the vivid royal blue, the start of a gray patina on the exposed areas of the frizzen spring, and a proper bright steel appearance on the high areas of the lock. A few minor dents and handling marks are visible overall, and the silver is showing a deep aged patina in the lower sections. Stock is fine, with light dings and dents with two very small loose sections of wire. Mechanically excellent.

As A, with two additional hallmarks visible on the lower tang.
