The lot features an original circa 1860 Civil War Surgeon’s field knife used for quick amputations on the battlefield. There are a few examples of US Civil War surgeon’s kits with more traditional handled and wide blade saws along with various scalpels, with this being more of a unique possibly personal item or Confederate piece. Baker’s Antiques and Auctions of New York offered nearly the same saw up for auction attributing it to the same provenance as this piece. The piece measures 16 ½ inches in length and has a thick hard wood handle that is comfortable for gripping along with a long thin sawtooth blade made for easy cutting through flesh, muscle, and bone. This is truly a unique Early American Civil War or Indian Wars collector’s piece.
