Sioux Quilled & Beaded Scalp Lock Signal Mirror
The lot features a wonderful scalp lock signal mirror with beautiful Quillwork and Beadwork attributed to the Lakota Sioux Native American Indians. The piece shows a braided long drop of human or horse hair which has been attached to the hide medallion on its hide end along with hide glue which is then further secured by the parfleche hide being wrapped around the braided or folded into as shown. The round medallion signal mirror shows a fine pinwheel porcupine quilled design in natural dyed yellow and purple over parfleche hide showing a smaller old mirror circle at the center which is framed in Hudson Bay wound glass red white heart trade beads of an early age which are also shown around the outside edge of the medallion and held into place with trade thread with some slight loss. The top of the piece shows a tie of Indian tanned hide which would have attached the piece to a belt and shows a parfleche rawhide like hardness. A signal mirror would have been carried by a Scout Indian would venture out further than his fellow tribe and use the mirror to shine reflections of the sun back to his warriors warning them of trespassers.
