The lot features an exceptional authentic Lakota Sioux beaded pipe bag dating to the circa 1870 to 1880's. The bag shows a lovely Great American Bison Buffalo Indian tanned hide made glass trade seed beaded body with a top deer or pronghorn Indian tanned hide section. The bag shows a very finely traditional geometric beaded pattern in all period correct glass trade seed beads. The beadwork shows a typical chalk white background with greasy yellow, cobalt, semi-transparent red, and semi-transparent green symbols. The top a fancy beaded border of semi-transparent yellow and the original wide Indian tanned hide strap. The bag would have held a holy peace pipe and tobacco. The inside of the bag shows a dark calico trade clothe lining. The bag would most likely have originally had a long drop of porcupine quilled ocher dyed fringe with rolled jingle cones, but these have since been removed. The bag is truly crafted of a very high quality and displays excellently. A bag such of this quality and authentic original age with the fringe would easily fetch as much as $20,000 to $30,000 at auction, but unfortunately the fringe has been removed. Provenance: From a large Native American weapons and beadwork collection in Great Falls, Montana. Measures overall 17.5" L x 7.5"W.
