(Disney, 1928) A hand-painted production background created for the short, "Ozzie of the Mounted." Its star, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, was an immediate hit with audiences, though the character was hardly lucky for Disney. Producer Charles Mintz was able to quickly secure a contract for the Oswald series with distributor Universal Pictures. With the initial success of the character, Walt approached Mintz for a more profitable payment deal. Mintz rejected the deal and ended their contract with Disney, and production of the Oswald shorts was moved to Winkler Pictures. As such, within a year of Oswald's debut, Mintz had full control of the character, and successfully poached much of Walt's animation staff. As a result, only 27 of 190 Oswald shorts were Disney made. This original hand-painted background was created during the original Disney period of the character, and is accomplished in pencil, ink, and paint. It depicts a wanted poster for Oswald's rival Peg-Leg Pete on the hewn log wall of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Headquarters. Measuring 8.75"x11.25, the production background is in fine condition. Very little original production artwork from this era has survived, making the remaining production artifacts from this nearly 100-year-old film exceptionally rare.
