Original Winchester Delivery Crate for 10 Model 94 Lever Action Sporting Carbines, marked with Winchester lightning bolt logo to both sides of box, with red/white/blue end labels. Top of box pencil addressed to J.M. Stewart & Co., Indiana, PA. It is interesting to note that J.M. Stewart, Indiana, PA, is the name of actor James (Maitland) Stewart, and addressed to his paternal grandfather's hardware store (also J.M. Stewart), which is now the Jimmy Stewart Museum, but at this time was a hardware store run by his grandfather and later his father. Stewart often sent his Academy Awards to be displayed in the front window. The Stewarts could trace their Indiana, PA roots back to 1772, where his paternal great-great-grandfather was captured by Indians in July 1776 and held captive for eleven months. Crate measures 43''x16''x12-1/2''. Condition is very good with light oxidation, toning, rounding at corners, and some minor losses to pine flats. Label shows approx. 75% original paper with just some losses. Top address is clear. A great early crate dating from the post-WWI period. Est.: $800-$1,200.
