Original Acrylic Painting 'Amazing Grace'
Laurel Barbieri's Original Acrylic Painting 'Amazing Grace' donated by Laurel Barbieri Studios is inspired by pictographs found in Lascaux Cave in southwestern France. In this work Laurel uses her unique relief sculpture technique to capture the essence of one of the world's great fading treasures. Lascaux Cave was discovered in 1940 by four teenage boys. Often referred to as the Sistine Chapel of Pre-historic Art, Lascaux Cave houses nearly 2,000 animal pictographs from the Upper Paleolithic period. It was opened as a tourist attraction in 1948 but was closed in 1963 due to damage caused by the carbon dioxide produced by the breath of the many visitors. 'I marvel at what life was like when men were painting these exquisite images on these cave walls,' Laurel says. 'When ancient man created these drawings he did not know what great gifts he was leaving us. For him perhaps the drawings were his way of showing homage to Mother Earth or perhaps he was simply journaling the day's events, when wealth was measured by good hunting seasons, clean drinkable water, a spacious cave, and warm fires. To me, these images are the most remarkable and exquisite works of art on earth. Through my work I hope to share these treasures and awaken the primitive thread that runs deep within all of us.' As an adult, Laurel turned to painting to capture the organic shapes, colors, and textures she came to love during her formative years. Her one-of-a-kind relief sculptures are heavily textured, filled with movement, and richly colored. These characteristics perfectly embody the themes she chooses for her artwork, including images inspired by the Lascaux caves such as 'Amazing Grace.'
