Northern Plains Turtle & Rawhide Rattle c. 1890
The lot features a fantastic turtle rattle with hardwood handle and rawhide wrapping from the Northern Plains Native American Indians of circa 1890. The piece shows a full turtle shell with amazing natural coloring holding various old stones in the center for rattling purposes held together with parfleche rawhide wrappings and hide glue onto a hardwood solid wood haft handle with unique tapering design. The handle has a dark brown to red color from much honest age and use and shows a pommel like end worn smooth at the top and tapering spike like gripping area, likely the user would hold both ends and shake the rattle above their head. This example is in overall good condition for its early 19th Century age, with the top of the shell having a small missing area. Provenance: From a large American Indian collection in Billings, Montana. Measures 18.25”L by 5”W by 2.75”D.
