Northern Cheynne Fully Beaded Moccasins c. 1880-90
This is an exceptional set of hide moccasins being fully beaded along the top from the Northern Cheyenne Native American Indians and dating to circa 1880-1890’s. The set shows an Indian tanned hide construction with parfleche hard soles most likely being Buffalo hide all sinew sewn and adorned with period correct glass trade seed beadwork in a traditional geometric pattern. The beadwork shows a chalk white background with patterns in red white hearts, black and medium green. The set is very unique and scarce in that the entire face of the bifurcated hide tongue is covered in the same period correct glass trade seed beadwork along with having a medium height hide ankle and the original hide tie straps. The beadwork is both sinew and trade thread sewn. The set is in excellent well-preserved museum quality condition showing little to no bead loss. The hard sole parfleche bases have a rich deep foot worn patina from honest authentic age and use. These are truly a fantastic well-preserved set with outstanding beadwork. Provenance: From one of the most prominent American Indian Collections in Billings, Montana where the set was found to be an authentic 19th Century example. Each moccasin measures overall 10.5”L soles by 4.25”W by 3.75”H ankle.
