Navajo Storm Pattern Rug Pinon circa 1975 LARGE
The lot features a phenomenal large Navajo Native American Indian wool weaving in the extremely rare Storm Pattern from Pinon Canyon, New Mexico circa 1975. The Storm Pattern is thought to have first originated at the Crystal Trading Post from trader, J.B. Moore where he published a catalog “Plate IX” which was obviously a Storm Pattern rug but was not labeled as such. That Plate IX catalog was printed between 1903 to 1911. This example shows an outstanding large full-size of 142 inches by 73 inches and is in very well-preserved good condition with not visible loss to the weave and has recently been professionally cleaned and blocked. The piece shows the iconic very recognizable geometric composition with a strong rectangular central element connected by stepped lines to elements in each of the four corners of the piece, done in a light brown with black diamond stepped outer edge having a white / cream stepped feature in each corner. The rug shows further immense detail with various stepped geometric and nearly three dimensional features in colors of grey, brown, blue, green, cream sitting on a grey background surrounded by a banded framing being four to five layers in white, brown, white and black. The shapes in many Storm pattern rugs examples represent the symbolic figures associated with the all-important rainstorms in the growing season such as four sacred mountains, lighting bolts, snowflakes and waterbugs. This example has a very tight fine weave and is the largest rug with such a fine immensely detailed weave we have offered for sale. The rug has an incredibly soft high quality hand spun 100% wool construction with all natural dyes in a very tightly hand woven craftsmanship of the highest quality. The Storm Pattern Navajo rug is from the Pinon Canyon, New Mexico from circa 1975. Provenance: The piece is from the collection of Mr. Williamson of Texas which held such amazing American Indian pieces as the Baldwin Ball Head War Club and “S” Ball Head War club sold in our previous sales and have been consigned directly from the Williamson Estate. The rug is in excellent condition for its 1975 age. The rug measures 142 inches in length by 73 inches in width without the tassels, with the tassels the piece measures 153 inches in length by 85 inches in width (shown in feet measures: w/o tassels 11 ft. 10 in. by 6 ft. 1 in. w/ tassels 12 ft. 9 in. by 7 ft. 1 in.). This is a room size, original Navajo rug with nice vintage collector age in pristine original condition. The piece was found to be an authentic original Storm Pattern Navajo Rug from Pinon Canyon, NW c. 1975 by the experts at Ranchfolks Navajo Rug Co. and was cleaned by blocked by Enver of Denver.
