Lakota Sioux Fully Beaded Tomahawk Drop c. 1890
This is an exceptional fully top beaded tomahawk drop from the Lakota Sioux Native American Indians dating to circa 1890-1920. The piece shows an Indian tanned hide construction being sinew sewn, a true attribute of early age, and further adorned with all early period correct glass trade seed cen beads. The beadwork shows a nice geometric pattern with greasy yellow background and storm like triangular patterns in red white hearts and light blue along with cross like smaller symbols also in red white heart and light blue along with cobalt. The tapering triangular shaped long drop beings as a wrap around the handle gripping area like attachment which is covered with four lines of beadwork in the same colors as below with the entire piece showing a light blue fancy beaded outside edge. The end of the drop shows tin long cut Indian tanned hide fringe with yellow ocher dye and Czechoslovakia bugle cut glass beads along with one early brass hawk trade bell. The piece shows a nice even patina and is in excellent well-preserved condition with little to no bead loss. Provenance: Collected in Idaho and from a very large private American Indian collection in Paris, France. Measures 25"L by 3.5"W.
