(Disney, c.1952-53) A concept pastel drawing by illustrator Kay Nielsen, from the production of Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty. A renowned Danish illustrator, Nielsen created artwork for numerous European collections of fairy tales in the 1910s before joining The Walt Disney Company in 1937. While revered for his contributions on many Disney films, particularly Fantasia's Night on Bald Mountain sequence, Nielsen only worked at the studio for four years. At the request of Art Director Ken Anderson, he returned over a decade later, serving as one of the first artists to develop concept art for Sleeping Beauty. Depicting the three Good Fairies outside the Woodcutter's Cottage, this Rackhamesque drawing was accomplished in colorful pastels atop black art paper. Because the studio eventually opted to adhere closer to Eyvind Earle's later concepts for the film's aesthetic, only a small number of Nielsen's pieces are known to have survived the production process, with fewer still ever being offered for public sale. The item has an image size of 6"x8" on its 8"x9" paper. The drawing displays in very fine condition, exhibiting the slightest edge wear, with few pinholes at the corners and annotations from intended production use. With his passing in 1957, Nielsen's work on Sleeping Beauty is among some of the last and most coveted pieces he created.
