(Disney, c.1954) An incredible early concept painting for the Disneyland Castle by Disney Legend Herb Ryman. Ryman began his career at the Disney Studio in 1938, serving as an art director for such feature-length animated classics as Fantasia and Dumbo. However, it was his work for the Disney Parks that became a cornerstone of his Disney career. It was in 1953 that Walt Disney called on his friend Herb to sketch the original design for Disneyland, launching a new direction of his artistic legacy. Ryman became one of the first "Imagineers," putting Walt's ideas for the design of his park into conceptual drawings and paintings. This original Sleeping Beauty Castle concept was a necessary step in the design and construction of Disneyland, and survives as an incredible artifact of Disney Parks history. Ryman was also a gifted teacher and mentor to many younger artists and designers. In the 1960s, he personally gave this original painting to his student and friend, Steve Shubin. Ryman's inscription at the bottom-left reads "One of the Preliminary Concept Designs for the Disneyland Castle - Herbert Ryman." Accomplished in acrylic, pencil, and marker on 19"x15.5" artist's board, the image depicts Walt's early vision for the centerpiece of his Park. Only a handful of Ryman's Castle concepts have been offered for public sale, making this an extremely rare and important part of Disneyland history. The painting is in fine condition with minimal wear along the edges. There is a Walt Disney Productions copyright stamp in the bottom-right corner.
