Franz Sodia Engraved Mauser .30-06 SN: 10705
Spectacular, engraved medium game bolt action sporting rifle chambered in .30-06 Springfield utilizing a large ring medium length Mauser action. Built by Franz Sodia of Ferlach, Austria circa 1961. Ferlach has a long and upstanding tradition of producing some of the finest hunting weapons of all types dating back to the 1500's and continues to this day. Ferlach firearms are known to have the perfect balance of quality, beauty, craftsmanship and functionality. The Sodia family began building guns in Ferlach in 1910 and closed down their factory in 1988. During their many decades as gunmakers they produced a magnitude of hunting gun models with customers including Carl Gustav of Sweden, Juan Carlos of Spain, Leonid Breschniew, Nicolae Ceasescu and others. The engraving work is master quality and is very reminiscent of Josef Fugger. It covers the receiver, triggerguard, floorplate & bolt handle featuring a diamond quilt pattern on the receiver ring & bridge, fine acanthus scroll throughout with ribbons on the floorplate, a full bodied buggling red stag in a forest scene on the floorplate and “FRANZ SODIA FERLACK” in an oval surrounding a large “S” on the triggerguard bow. Configuration: Blued finish, Bohler Spezial 24” tapered barrel without provisions for sights, installed Redfield one-piece scope base, butter knife bolt handle, serrated Timney adjustable trigger, three-position safety, and high gloss extra fancy walnut stock with contoured forend & pistol grip, fancy free form bordered hand checkering, contrasting forend tip, contrasting tear drop shaped grip cap, roll-over cheekpiece, White Line recoil pad & 13 3/4” LOP. Rifle retains approximately 95%+ original bluing with the barrel & receiver turning slightly plum and the floorplate in-the-white. Action is smooth with a crisp trigger pull, the bore is excellent, engraving is fine and the extra fancy wood stock is good with many blemishes.
Condition is near NRA Very Good.
