Chinese export underglaze blue and white porcelain plate, the center well painted with a scholar’s garden scene of bamboo and flowering peony issuing from pierced rockwork beside a fenced terrace, with butterfly in flight above. The cavetto left plain, the wide rim decorated with alternating floral sprays and auspicious objects between double-line borders, enclosed by a trellis diaper band at the edge, the lip with a brown-dressed rim. Plain glazed underside with neatly cut footrim and unglazed buff biscuit showing kiln grit. Probably Qianlong period, mid–late 18th century. A classic export plate with well-balanced cobalt painting.
