Featured in this lot is this original photograph of Chief Red Horse and his family taken by an Army Officer circa 1897 in Topeka, Kansas. The photograph is black and white and depicts Chief Red Horse with his family in front of his tee pee as he stands with three other women and a young boy. The piece shows its original auction tag fastened on the back of the frame. Red Horse was a sub-chief of the Miniconjou Sioux. He fought in the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn, and in 1881 he gave one of the few detailed accountings of the event. He also drew pictographs of the Little Bighorn Battle. Red Horse married twice and had three children. The condition of this framed photograph is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this framed photograph is 13 1/4" x 15 1/2" and the visible photograph measures 5 7/8" x 8 1/8". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery.
