C. 1890 Zia Polychrome Pottery Olla - Sundog Est.
This is an outstanding, authentic circa 1890 Zia Polychrome Painted Pottery Olla from the Sundog Bruce VanLandingham estate collection. This is truly one of the sale highlights and one of only a few examples of 19th-century Zia Pottery on the public market. The pottery olla is polychrome painted with a geometric pattern showing mineral pigment colors of red / orange, black / brown and cream. The piece is of an excellent large size and well preserved. Large 19th Century examples such as this are extremely uncommon. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery. The pottery had a price of $10,000 from Sundog Gallery. For examples see the 19th Century Zia Pottery Olla sold by Hindman Auction in April 2022 for $9,030 (w/ bp), the late-19th-Century Zia Olla sold by Morphy Auction in 2018 for $33,280 (w/ bp), and Zia Olla circa 1900 which sold in 2019 by Cowan’s for $5,535. This is truly a fantastic example showing well kept condition with very little minor paint loss, such as on the top rim, but overall in phenomenal condition. Measure overall 12” diameter and 11.5” height.
