LIFE SIZE OF FIRST JUMP ADDED TO THOUSAND OAKS BLVD:
A mare and her colt, immortalized in a bronze sculpture by world-renowned artist Lorenzo Ghiglieri, now reside on Thousand Oaks Boulevard, where their beauty can inspire those passing by.

“First Jump,” a heroic statue originally created for charity, represents power, beauty and hope, Ghiglieri said.

“That colt beside his mother could become a gold medal Olympian, a Kentucky Derby winner or a companion and pet,” the sculptor said.

Ghiglieri understands personally the importance of breeding and the opportunity that colt has to fulfill his dreams. He is a fourth-generation artist, he said born to an Italian sculptor father and French artist mother Ghiglieri grew up near an underserved Los Angeles area that was rich with ethnic diversity and culture.

He wasn’t satisfied with his raw talent, he said, and sought out formal training, which at age 75 he still holds dear. At age 20, after receiving a scholarship and studying the masters-including Rembrandt, Velzquez and Corot-he was being appreciated nationally, he said. Two years later America was at war and Ghiglieri was serving in the U.S. Navy, where he received his first commission from the U.S. government: a painting to be presented as a gift to Great Britain in honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation.

It wasn’t until years later, Ghiglieri said, while trekking across America’s mountains and deserts and documenting his frontier experiences, that he became passionate about preserving and protecting this country’s Western heritage through paintings and sculpture.

Ghiglieri’s work can be seen in the White House, the Vatican, the Kremlin in Moscow and the royal palace in Madrid.

The artist believes his work endures because of his philosophy that it must be purposeful, meaningful, positive and uplifting. He attempts to capture history with his sculptures and paintings, and a show of works chronicling California will open in Los Angeles next year.

Ghiglieri now lives in Oregon on a ranch with 93 horses. The art he creates there is purchased for sites around the globe.

“First Jump” was unveiled by Selvin Properties last month in Thousand Oaks at The Courtyard at Westlake, 3625 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., during a ceremony attended by city officials and about 500 others.

“It was a thrill-and-a-half for us to get it. It’s perfect, I love it,” said Harry Selvin, property owner.

He’d been planning on putting up a water element, a very pretty waterfall, he said.

“Then I was at a shop and I saw the statue-it was love at first sight-a total surprise,” said Selvin.

Being a fervent advocate for the arts and finding what he described as the perfect piece, he just had to add it to the Thousand Oaks landscape, he said.

More people should be adding art like this to the city, Selvin said, a sentiment Ghiglieri wholeheartedly agrees with. Right now the artist is working on a rearing stallion called “Wild Splendor” that would make a great companion piece to “First Jump,” Ghiglieri said.
