Historic Winchester Model 1894 lever action SRC, S/N 907683, belonging to noted Western soldier and lawman Thomas Rynning with copy of a March 3, 1965 Affidavit from his grandson indicating this carbine, by serial number, was purchased, owned and used by his grandfather, Thomas Rynning. This gun was previously in the famous Charlie Schreiner/Y.O. Ranch collection and was previously sold under the auspices of Little John’s many years ago to our consignor. The Affidavit also provides information on Rynning that includes “Thomas Rynning was a Captain in the Arizona Rangers. He carried this carbine as a ‘saddle gun’ while a member of the Arizona Rangers”. The document also notes that as a youth, Tom worked on cattle drives in the area of Dodge City and when old enough, joined the U.S. Cavalry, being involved in active combat against the Apache Indians in addition to joining and serving in the Spanish-American War with Teddy Roosevelt and the “Rough Riders” including his participation in the battle for San Juan Hill, Cuba. Further, it is noted after leaving the Rangers, Rynning was selected by the Governor of Arizona to serve as the Warden of the Territorial Prison at Yuma. He later re-joined the Arizona Rangers as a tracker, making several trips into Mexico after bandits and cattle thieves. Historical records also note that late in his career, Rynning moved to San Diego, California where he served as a Deputy U.S. Marshal until his death at 75 in June of 1941. The Affidavit concludes with the statement “This Winchester Carbine was given to my Mother by my Grandfather, who in turn gave it to me. This gun has been in our family since Thomas Rynning bought it. I now turn the ownership of the above described Carbine to Sgt. Taylor, making it his property and do hereby disclaim ownership of it”. Signed, “Daryl Dwyers” and witnessed by U. S. Army Asst. Adjutant Infantry Captain, Gerald Rowe. The copy of the Affidavit is accompanied by other details and information concerning Rynning’s career including copies of a number of newspaper articles published at the time of his death. The gun itself is in overall good to very good condition showing the majority of its blued finish on the barrel and loading tube; the receiver displays a pleasing grey/brown patina; the action and markings are crisp and the bore is good; the wood stocks are good to very good. An important gun descended through the family of a long-term, well-known Western lawman who also served with Teddy Roosevelt in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. (C& R). Est.: $6,000-$12,000.
