Sharps Model 1874 Sporting rifle, .40 caliber, 30” octagon barrel, 12 pounds in weight, double set triggers (working at time of description), wood stocks, S/N 156731; accompanied by factory letter dated July 4, 2000, confirming caliber, barrel length and weight; with invoicing at the Bridgeport factory on March 22, 1876 to Claus Lohder, Jenny Lind, Calaveras County, California. The letter further states “Lohder was a private customer ordering directly from the factory and was given this substantial discount ($42 less 20%) owing to the fact that he ordered 7 Sporting Rifles at this time, along with 7 sets of reloading implements, 6 sets of globe and peep sights made to order with a split bar, 2 ball swages, 1100 shells .40 – 2-1/4 inch and 7M primers. The total of the order, less discount and including packing case and cartage, came to $311.20”. Also included with this lot are 6 ORIGINAL very rare letters between Lohder and the Sharps Factory including the original order! The Sharps is in overall good condition with an even brown patina to metal surfaces, crisp action, good markings, good bore with some areas of light pitting and overall good wood showing some scattered mars and scratches with expected wear from handling and carry. Amazing period documentation! (Antique). Est.: $5,000-$10,000.
