Offered for sale in this lot is this lovely, uncleaned condition ANTIQUE serial number production Winchester Repeating Arms Model 1892 octagon barrel rifle in the desirable .38-40 caliber. This example showing serial number: 162121, attributing its manufacture to the year 1898. The rifle is offered with the .38-40 caliber, which was one of the LARGEST chamberings in the Browning designed 1892. The .38-40 was introduced in the 1880’s by Winchester and later adapted to Colt revolvers, remains still popular today. The 1892 Winchester was Jonathon Browning's answer to an updated repeating lever action rifle, built to handle shorter cartridges. The 1892 was produced in its first form between 1892 and 1945 - This outstanding example is one of few surviving pre-1899 antique production examples that retains an exceptionally attractive deep aged factory blue finish and showing correct early roll stampings, reading; "Model 1892 - WINCHESTER - PAT . OCT 14. 1884" on the upper tang, "38 W.C.F." on the top of the barrel - behind the rear sight, "MANUFACTURED BY THE - WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A." on the top of the barrel, and serial number "162121" on the bottom of the receiver. Additionally, the rifle shows a full 24" octagon barrel, a height adjustable buckhorn rear sight paired with a correct Winchester blade front sight, and beautiful walnut fixtures. These early production 1892 rifles almost always saw hard frontier usage, and are almost always found in severely used and abused condition. This example retains an exceptionally attractive deep aged blue factory finish, excellent wooden fixtures, showing only light handling marks, and untouched screw heads - Indicating this rifle has never been disassembled. Additionally, the rifle shows very-good mechanical condition, boasting a tight action, and a strong bright bore. This rifle would make an incredible addition to any premier Western firearms collection. Early antique production examples are almost never found in this high state of preservation. This is an extremely attractive 120 year old example in a sought after caliber that is in far better condition than most 1892s of any vintage encountered today. The rifle qualifies as an Antique Long Gun, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 162121. NO FFL.
