For your consideration in this lot is a very rare and early Walla Walla prison made hitched horsehair and leather headstall. The Washington State Penitentiary headstall is from circa 1900-1910 and is a very early and rare authentic original. The headstall and bosal are crafted of imported kangaroo leather and is adorned with polychrome hitched and braided horsehair accents. The intricately braided leather shows a two-tone finish, with rich brown, and dark black fantastically intertwined. The set shows good condition overall, though there is heavy wear indicative of age, and use. The bosal alone measures 7" wide, and 16" long. Examples of Walla Walla Prison Made headstalls have sold at public auction such as at High Noon Western Americana’s 1/28/2012 sale for $1,920, at High Noon’s 1/28/2012 auction for $10,200, Morphy Auctions 5/26/2017 sale for $4,127.50, and Morphy Auctions 5/26/2017 sale for $2,540.
