WWO INTRODUCTION
WWO’s unique mission is to identify the immediate and long-term medical, developmental, social and emotional needs of children living in orphanages abroad, to improve the quality of their lives through direct medical and psychosocial services and education.
There are some things about orphanages that cross international borders. Children receive no individual attention and they quickly begin to suffer developmental delays. Babies lie in cribs for hours at a time, with soiled diapers and bottles either pouring milk down their throats or not reaching them at all. Toddlers roam the orphanage halls aimlessly and youngsters have nothing to do all day except watch TV (if they’re lucky enough to have one). Toys are either nonexistent or shared among dozens of children. Most of the food lacks even basic nutritional content and most of the children lack even one change of clothing.
Please keep these conditions in mind as your scroll down the list of items needed in each country.
Give joy
When a child unwraps birthday gifts … attacks an ice cream cone … whispers I love you … you know true joy. Share it with a child who has never celebrated a birthday, tasted ice cream or known a parent’s love.
Give hope
In a world where you watched your parents die of AIDS or have seen your country devastated by war, it’s hard to be hopeful. It’s hard to be hopeful on an empty stomach or when you’re wracked by HIV. But WWO ensures that children receive the basics of life – food, shelter and medical care – and then goes on to give them education, sports, arts and opportunity.
Give love
Children blossom when home at last, nurtured by parents, surrounded by family and friends, sleeping and eating regularly. Imagine a child alone in the world, without that sense of security and without the love that is every child’s birthright. WWO Orphan Rangers and “grannies” reach out to children one by one. It’s a little bit of heaven for these kids; it’s a taste of love.
While the numbers are vast, this is about helping individual children in various countries. Think 6-month old girl. . .four-year old boy. . .and know that you can help each child live a better life.
